Cracked Tooth

How do you know if your tooth is cracked? And, if it is cracked, how long do you wait to treat it? What happens if you wait too long? We see this daily and the only answer is to have the tooth diagnosed by a dentist immediately.

Pain on chewing is a primary symptom. Sensitivity to heat, cold, sour, sweet or sticky are other symptoms. Cracked teeth are really hard to diagnose as they do not always show up on x-ray or to the naked eye.

Treatment may include restoring the tooth with a crown. A root canal may also be necessary if the pulp has been damaged. Ocassionally the tooth will require extraction due to a severe crack.

If you suspect a cracked tooth, avoid chewing on that side and get to a dentist right away.
